The brilliant ruins of Chichén Itzá is evidence of a dazzling ancient city that once centered the Mayan empire in Central America. The Maya and Toltec vision of the world and the universe is revealed in their stone monuments and artistic works. The fusion of Mayan construction techniques with new elements from central Mexico make Chichén Itzá one of the most important examples of the Mayan-Toltec civilization.
Chichén Itzá is a full complex of Mayan ruins on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. A massive step pyramid, known as El Castillo or Temple of Kukulcan, dominates the ancient city, which thrived from around 600 A.D. to the 1200s. Graphic stone carvings survive at structures like the ball court, Temple of the Warriors and the Wall of the Skulls.
The Kukulkan Pyramid in Chichén Itzá is one of the new seven wonders of the world elected in 2007 and a must-see when in the Yucatan.
